<p>The Sanskrit text that offers the foundation is the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. There are four books to this text that were written over 2000 years ago. The four books are the Kaivalya Pada, Vibhuti Pada, Samadhi Pada, and the Sadhana Pada. The Sadhana Pada is where the physical aspects of yoga are found.</p>
<p>Within this book you will discover the &#8220;eight limbs&#8221; which are steps called the Ashtanga Yoga. The first five of these limbs concern aids from the external while the final three limbs deal with issues of the internal. The third of these limbs is all about discipline of the body. It preaches that the human body should be free of disease and that vital energy must be preserved. Western versions of this ancient discipline have derived from the teachings in this book of the Sutras.</p>
<p>The word asana is the plural form of asan, which means posture or position of the body. The purpose is improved flexibility and meditation. With asana, positions should always be steady and firm, yet comfortable at all times.</p>
<p>Therefore, any pain experienced while assuming poses means that you are not achieving your goal. Poses are plentiful for beginners as well as advanced practitioners.</p>
<p>Whatever your level of expertise is, there are some fundamentals to always keep to. Exercises should be performed on an empty stomach. Breathing must not be erratic but rather controlled and easy. Positions should be such that your body does not tremble from too much strain or pressure. Mats should be used most often instead of doing exercises on the floor. When you complete a session, you should allot time to finding a state of deep relaxation.</p>
<p>Some poses are done standing up. Others are performed lying down, sitting, balancing or with a bent back. Beginning positions that are done sitting include the Seated Wide Legged Straddle, Half Lord of the Fishes and the Cobbler&#8217;s Pose. Some of the standing positions for those just starting are The Pyramid, The Standing Forward Bend and The Downward Facing Dog.</p>
<p>As we discussed, yoga is so much more than simply arranging your body into a certain pose. <p>According to Renaissance Orthopedics:</p>
<p>Between 1971-1975, knee replacements accounted for 51% of the treatments.</p>
<p>During 2000-2003, knee replacements accounted for 92% of osteoarthritis cases.</p>
<p>From now to 2030, knee replacements will increase from 450,000 to 3.48 million per year.</p>
<p>Between now and 2030, it&#8217;s estimated that hip replacements will climb from 208,600 to 572,100 per year.</p>
<p>I remember as a young man in North Carolina, I can&#8217;t remember anyone with a joint replacement back in the 60&#8242;s. The FDA says that today modern medicine has allowed joint replacements to be easier and more available. Which sounds good, but are we having more replacements because it is easier or because our bodies are in worse shape than our parents and grandparents. I believe the latter. In my practice I see people of all ages, from 20-95 years of age, and their joints are freezing up due to inactivity, poor diet, and being overweight. Let&#8217;s look at the importance of each.</p>
<p>Inactivity is a major cause of joints going bad. You would think by being inactive, your joints would last longer, however the opposite is true. Moving your joints through their full range of motion actually causes your body to inject synovial fluid into the joint. This synovial fluid works like oil, or WD40, on your joints. The lubrication will help keep arthritis away and keep your joint gliding along.</p>
<p>Active Isolated Stretching gives your joints proper spacing by stretching your muscles. This keeps yur cartilage in place to provide cushion for your joint. Stretching every other day and exercise each day for 30 minutes will go a long way in keeping your joints healthy.</p>
<p>Eating a bad diet prevents your body from having the healing powers it was designed to have. This can lead to joint replacement. As you move, you will cause slight muscle tears around your joints, it is natural. Good eating habits will allow your body to heal them. All the pills, drinks, and powders out there are no where near as good as good food. A great drink to try is water with a squeezed slice of lemon.</p>
<p>Keeping your body weight under control is the final step to good joint health. Picture this, you have a small pickup truck and you decide to carry all the dirt that is in the back of a huge dump truck at one time. What do you think will happen to your little truck once you unload the dirt in the dump truck onto your truck? The axles will probably break! Well, that is what is happening to your body when you are overweight. Your body is designed to carry only so much weight for your height. So if you are 6&#8217;4&#8243; tall. You can carry more weight than if you 5&#8217;4&#8243; tall. Being overweight is not genetic either. You are not overweight because of the size of your bones either. Most people really do not have a clear concept of eating properly. I didn&#8217;t say eating perfectly! By keeping your weight at a healthy level, it will take the pressure off your joints, you will have increased energy to exercise every day, and your body will be able to heal itself after every activity.</p>
<p>What are you waiting for? The quicker you start eating better and getting your body back into shape, the less damage you will do to your joints. They ar your joints! Start small and work up quickly to a faster pace. Remember- EAT TO LIVE, NOT LIVE TO EAT.</p>
